Aloha Friday/2 Question Thursday

Every once and a while I participate in Aloha Friday, where I ask a simple question for you to answer (nothing that requires a lengthy response) and Two Question Thursday (same idea...only TWO questions).   My questions for you today (which you can answer in the comments if you like ) are:

  • There are many problem in the world, and many good causes we can support.  Is there a particular cause which is on your heart?
  •  What have you done about it...or what do you plan to do?

There are various causes which I care about.  If you've been following my blog at all the last couple weeks you can probably guess which one "gets to me" the most.  When I first learned that slavery still existed I was horrified...but it was something "far away" and I was a poor college student and didn't see what I could do.  Surprisingly I didn't hear more about this issue for several years...but then I started to stumble on articles here and there.  I learned that it was very widespread...and that it didn't just happen across the world but that it happened here.  I learned that men in Florida had been beaten and locked in a truck and forced to pick tomatoes for nothing, that women and young girls are forced to prostitute themselves by violent pimps on US streets daily, that 1,000s are trafficked into the US every year for forced work of one sort or another.  I learned that forced labor (here and abroad) contributes  to almost every product we buy.  And I learned about the horrors of child sex trafficking, and how American pediphiles helped fuel the "sex tourism" industry in Asia.

I thought of what I could do, and I came up with an idea to use giveaways to spread awareness.  In stead of asking someone to go check out a product to enter, I'd ask them to check out some info on human trafficking.   I put this idea into practice this month in the Hearts Should Be Free Giveaway Event.  And the response I've gotten is so encouraging.  More people have entered these giveaways than any I've held here before, and the comments let me know people are really hearing.

So, whatever it is that's the cause of your heart....I want to encourage you that you can do something about it.  Being part of the solution is not out of reach.

Aloha Friday - Fair Trade

This month is Fair Trade Month, "where Fair Trade brands and supporters come together to raise awareness about the importance of equitable labor practices that ensure workers earn fair wages in safe conditions" (GoodBlog).  I love fair trade ( I like the idea that the people who help make the product are paid fairly and LOVE knowing that the product is slave-free).  But, honestly, most of what I buy isn't fair trade.  I'd like it to be...I'd like all of it to be, but three things get in my way...
  1. Cost
  2. Availability
  3. Convenience
Cost
Yes, fair trade sometimes costs more, but not always.  For instance, the fair trade gift items I've bought from The Hunger Site cost less then similar items I saw at the mall (even when shipping was factored in).

Availability
There's some things that just aren't available to buy fair trade...yet!

Convenience
There's other things that are available, but not convenient.   For instance, Halloween candy.  I CAN get it, but its not available in any of the stores I shop at...so I have to order online ahead of time.

So, do I beat myself up for this?  Nope.  I focus on what I can do in stead of what I can't.  I try to buy free trade where it's feasible and reasonable to do so.  For instance, my chocolate habit...there is free trade chocolate at the supermarket, and though it's in the gourmet isle and costs a little more then some other brands, I can afford to eat a little less and pay more for that.   I figure this helps support a free trade company, and maybe sends a message to big brand companies too (if they see fair trade succeeding they might try it too), and it keeps those products on the shelf and not in mail order.  (Oh, and here's a cool tool to help you find fair trade products near you.)

So, here's my question for you for Aloha Friday today (the question meme I participate in here now and then):

Have you ever tried a fair trade product, and if so what did you try and what did you think of it?

Aloha Friday + 2 Q Thurs - Aps

Every week or so I participate in Aloha Friday, where I ask a simple question for you to answer (nothing that requires a lengthy response) and Two Question Thursday (same idea...only TWO questions).  If you'ld like to, comment with an answer to the questions below:

Well, about a year ago my husband's work provided him with an iPhone, and we were introduced to the world of aps.  Aps are little programs and games that can go on your phone, which you can buy or sometimes get free.   My questions today are about aps!

1.  For those of you with a phone that has aps (or who have a friend/relative who lets you play on theirs), tell me about an ap you really love.

2.  OK, now everyone think back to...oh, high school.  Could you have imagined then that there would be phones that do what they do now?

Please leave your answers in a comment.  Thanks a bunch!

Aloha Friday - Advice Wanted

Every week or so I participate in Aloha Friday, where I ask a simple question for you to answer (nothing that requires a lengthy response). If you'ld like to, comment with an answer to the questions below:
Intex 8' X 18" Sun Fish Snapset Pool
I have a kiddie pool sort of like this the one pictured on the right.  I like it because it holds a lot of water and you don't have to blow it up, and it's safe for my littlest because he can get in and out of it easily.  But it has a big problem too...it's a pain in the butt to store.  You're supposed to roll it up but I never can get it to roll up small enough to fit in it's box (which I've now lost anyways).  So, after last summer, it got left out, sort of rolled up in a corner of my yard I can't see from any windows.  And it got rained on, and the plastic bottom now has mold on it.  Now I can't figure out what to do with it.

So, what would you do?  Bleach it and try to get rid of the mold?  Toss it and get another one?  Toss it and try something else?

Please leave your answers in a comment.  Thanks a bunch!

2 Question Thursday/Aloha Friday

Every week or so I participate in Aloha Friday, where I ask a simple question for you to answer (nothing that requires a lengthy response) and Two Question Thursday (same idea...only TWO questions).  If you'ld like to, comment with an answer to the questions below:

1.  I'm really hoping someone knows the answer to this and can help me.  My spell checker on Firefox is set on British English.  It wants me to change color to colour and endeavors to endeavours.  It's getting on my nerves now and I want to change it.  Anyone know how?  (Icy, the first person to comment, knew this...THANKS...so no you can skip this one).

2.  What little (or big) problem is annoying you lately?

Aloha Friday

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday. Every Friday (well, ok, almost every Friday) I ask a simple question for you to answer--nothing that requires a lengthy response.

My questions are these:
  1. What's your favorite frozen microwave dinner?
Please leave your answer in a comment.

MY ANSWER:
My favorite is Mayan Harvest Bake by Kashi, which tastes like no microwave meal I've ever tasted, and which I only get once and a while for a treat because it's kinda pricey.  The ones I eat the most are the Marie Callendar's Meals, which are delicious and really quite reasonably priced.

Aloha Friday/Two Question Thursday - Poetry

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday. Every Friday (well, ok, almost every Friday) I ask a simple question for you to answer--nothing that requires a lengthy response.  I'm combining this with Two Question Thursday (same idea...only TWO questions).

This week I've stumbled on a Poetry Giveaway Event. I'm a poetry lover, so the chance to win books of poetry is exciting to me.  Which brings me to my questions for this week...

So, this week's questions are related to that:
  1. Do you enjoy reading poetry?
  2. If so, what's your favorite poet or poem?
You can answer in the comments.  Thanks!

I love poetry, and my favorite poets are Seamus Heaney,  Sarah Teasdale,  Shakespeare, and a lot of poets who aren't so famous, who I met online.

If you have a blog and would like to post your own questions you can leave your link on the appropriate day at the linkys at 2 Questions Thursday and An Island Life.

Aloha Friday - St. Patrick

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday. Every Friday (well, ok, almost every Friday) I ask a simple question for you to answer--nothing that requires a lengthy response.

Last week I asked what was the first that came to mind of when you thought of St. Patrick's Day.  Here's the answers I got, in order of most to least...

  • Green (or wearing green) - 5x*
*more than that if you include green clover or green beer, or green Shamrock cookies.

  • Corned beef and cabbage - 5x (2x with potatoes 1x with carrots mentioned)

  • Shamrocks, clovers, or 4 leaf clovers - 5x (if you count the shamrock cookies)

  • Green beer - 3x

  • Irish Soda Bread - 2x

  • Leprechauns - 2x if you count...

  • Leprachaun, the Movie - 1x

  • Posts of gold - 1x

  • Gold coins - 1x

  • Rainbows - 1x

  • Guiness - 1x

  • Green shamrock cookies - 1x
I was surprised that Ireland or Irish wasn't mentioned (except as part of Irish Soda Bread).  What I wasn't surprised about was that St. Patrick himself, or anything in did or was thought to do, wasn't mentioned.  Until a few years ago I had no idea who he was or why a holiday was named after him.  Turns out he was a fascinating man with a fascinating story.   If you'ld like to learn more about him, there's a great blog post about that here.  But before you read that, please answer my question...

  • What do you know about St. Patrick?

You can answer in the comments.  Thanks!  And, if you would like to join me for a Linky Party celebrating St. Patrick's Day as a religious holiday, I will be posting up a linky at my other blog, Scribbleprints sometime today.

Aloha Friday/Two Question Thursday

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday. Every Friday (well, ok, almost every Friday) I ask a simple question for you to answer--nothing that requires a lengthy response.  I'm combining this with Two Question Thursday (same idea...only TWO questions).

This week I've been participating in a wonderful event called One World One Heart,  where bloggers around the world post giveaways and share a little bit about themselves. And boy has it been fun!  I've met people from around the world and even someone who lives near my hometown!  You can still join in on the fun!  Blogger's can join up through February 12th.

So, this week's questions are related to that:
  1. Have you ever heard of One World One Heart?
  2. If you are participating, tell me about one interesting person/blog you stumbled upon in your OWOH travels.
You can answer in the comments.  Thanks!

In my travels I've found many, many wonderful bloggers with interesting stories.  Something one blogger said really touched my heart.  She mentioned many different things she loved and did...and then said "But God has my heart more than these."  It made me think about what has my heart.  You can visit her blog here.

Would you like to see my one world posts?  I have several blogs, which is why I have more than one.    Here they are, and what I'm giving away:

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday. Every Friday (well, ok, almost every Friday) I ask a simple question for you to answer--nothing that requires a lengthy response.  I'm combining this with Two Question Thursday (same idea...only TWO questions).

Here's my questions this week:
  1. Do you have any suggestions for gifts for an 80 year man old who loved to shoot skeet but can't any more and loves Louis Lamour books but has read them all?  He also likes crosswords (but can't do them anymore because his hands shake).
  2. Do you know of any great games for helping to teach a second language to children (namely Spanish).  They could be video games, card games, board games, online games, or games you just through up.  Thanks!

My little one is turning 6 at the end of the month.  I'm getting him Star Wars Legos cuase he loves that, but I'd like to also get him something fun that's not so "character" driven.  So, here's my question for my Aloha Friday and Two Question Friday:

  1. What is a really cool unique present for a 6 year old boy?
  2. When you were six, what was the best gift you got (if you remember?)

Aloha Friday - Organization

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday. Every Friday (well, ok, almost every Friday) I ask a simple question for you to answer--nothing that requires a lengthy response.

With three kids and a husband, the laundry never really gets done. Seriously, if you wanted to hide something from me, the bottom of one of our hampers might be a good place. And our laundry "room" doesn't help the problem. It was the one compromise we made on the house: I didn't want a little laundry nook right next to the kitchen with no room to put stuff. Well, our little laundry nook is in the doorway to the garage and laundry bags block the door most of the time (I tried keeping the laundry bags out IN the garage but we discovered our water heater has a habit of overflowing...by the time I found them they were mildewed and had to throw out a bunch of stuff. NOT something I want to repeat). So, this week, I'd like to ask about what you do to organize. If you have a solution to my lil' laundry problem, wonderful! But feel free to share other organization tips too...cause this isn't the only part of our house that needs help!

What's something you do to organize your home! Anything you do that works well for you. Thanks!

Oh, and here's some of the things that HAVE worked for me along the way...

  • Organizing the closet by colors.  It only takes a lot of time the first time you do it.  Once it's done it makes it really easy to see where the different colors go, so it's easy to keep it that way...and makes it really easy to find stuff in the morning.  I also use kids hangers for my dress-pants, which makes them hang higher than the rest, and they have their own section...you can get special pants hangers for this if you weren't gifted with the "I can eat anything and still be tiny gene" and your pants don't fit on kids hangers.  Sorry folks, I know you hate me right now.
  • If you have more than one child who will be inheriting clothes, DON'T label clothes with their first name...label it with your last name and/or phone number.
  • When you have more than one child, to keep their socks separate, label them with the size, not the name or initial of the child...because eventually the younger child will inherit the older child's socks, and if you used their name that makes things all sorts of confusing (yes, I speak from experience).  Also, it's helpful to buy a different brand or style of socks every other size.  For example, for size 5 buy the socks with the green seems, for size six go for the brand that has blue seems (or you could do knee high, then ankle, etc.) .  This helps keep the sock sizes straight.

Aloha Friday

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday. Every Friday (well, ok, almost every Friday) I ask a simple question for you to answer--nothing that requires a lengthy response.

My son doesn't like peanut butter and he doesn't like meat.  Yeah...so I've been sending him to school with bagels and cream cheese.  I need something else.

Any suggestions for meatless sandwhiches or other bag lunch items OTHER without peanut butter or meat?

Aloha Friday

I'm attempting to earn some money for Mercy Corps by selling some stuff through Ebay Giving Works.  How's it going?  Well, I've got one bid on a Star Wars Lego video game I'm selling, one watcher on some matching 12 mo and 5T boys clothes, but no bids or watchers yet on the matching 4T/5T sweaters, Gymboree shortalls, or  Sleep Deprived Parent T-shirts.  Though so far this is better than I've done with the adds I tried to sell here, and the fund raising page I created.  I mean, at least I've got one thing that will sell for sure!

Anyways, today is Aloha Friday, where I ask a question for you to answer in the comments.  So I'm wondering....

Have you ever tried to earn money for a charity?  What did you do, and how well did it go?

Aloha Friday - Wedding Dresses

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday. Every Friday (well, ok, almost every Friday) I ask a simple question for you to answer--nothing that requires a lengthy response.

Here's my question....
Do you still have your wedding dress? If not, what did you do with it (Sell it? Donate it? Make it into a really fancy tablecloth?)

For married guys...Does your wife still have her wedding dress? For single ladies...Do you think you'ld keep your wedding dress or sell it after you got married? For single guys...uh...hmmm...I got nothing, sorry.

Please leave your answer in a comment below.

For my answer to this question, go here (it's kinda a fun story).

Aloha Friday

I've decided to take part in a little meme called Aloha Friday hosted by An Island Life.  Every Friday (or nearly every Friday) I'll ask a fun question which you can answer in the comments below.

My question this week is...
If you were given $100 that you could use only to get something for someone else not in your immediate family, what would you get and for whom?
